10 Years of Success!

March 22, 2024

Friday 22 March marked the 10th anniversary since Manchester Central Library re-opened to the public following its landmark transformation (pictured left to right: Trustees John Rooney, Jenni Willows and Vicky Rosin).

Affectionately known as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Manchester’s Libraries, it underwent a major transformation between 2010-14 to re-vamp its appearance, facilities and services.

Now, almost 90 years after its grand opening, the iconic and much loved venue attracts over 2 million annual visitors, keen to find a safe and dynamic place to work, read and study, enjoy an eclectic mix of cultural and creative activities, or simply find a quiet space to take a break and meet up with friends in the café. Central Library truly has something for everyone.

Central Library marked its 10th year since re-opening on Friday 22 March with an afternoon of activities open to all and celebrated with Archives+ partners, school groups and the cutting of a special birthday cake by the Lord Mayor.

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure, said:

“This is a momentous time for Manchester as it prepares to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Manchester Central Library’s grand opening and its 10th anniversary since its major refurbishment to improve our spaces for visitors. The biggest library in our city centre has been steadfast in providing residents with a safe place to learn, share ideas and nurture the deep sense of community in every visitor that steps through our doors including families, students and countless volunteers. Similar to our rich history almost 100 years ago, we hope celebrating this anniversary will continue to inspire and motivate our residents and partners to continue to hold Manchester Central Library up as a cornerstone to their community”
